Armed intruders bursting into your home and violently assaulting your family. That is the signature of a home invasion and while rare the consequences are so severe that special attention should be given to protecting against it.
The absolute pre-requisite is to make sure that doors are locked, ALL THE TIME.
The first area is the physical construction of the doors, these should be solid core and can be hardwood, steel or reinforced fibreglass. Locks should be long throw deadbolts and door edges should be fitted with reinforcement plates and keeper plates should be fitted with long screws. French/double doors should be fitted with throw bolts at top and bottom. All glass should be laminated and/or fitted with a thick clear security film laminate. Security laminates are constructed through a factory lamination of several thin layers of clear polyester films bonded together with aggressive adhesives and fitted to the inside surface of the glass.
A tactic used by bandits is to ring the door bell and when the homeowner unlatches the door it is pushed back hard and thieves enter violently. The protective method is to answer the door before opening. The simplest and cheapest device is a door viewer which is drilled into the door. Another novel method is the door bell/phone. When the door bell is pushed it rings the phones in the house and the visitor can be quizzed before going to the door.
The most technologically advanced systems use audio and video images that are transmitted over the home’s internet network and the image and audio is displayed on any computer screen. The systems can remotely control pan/tilt/zoom and cameras are designed to work in very low light levels. In the not too distant past this technology was very expense but in recent years the cost has become quite affordable with good systems costing less than one thousand dollars.
