Heat Rejection films

April 26, 2010

Security films, also referred to as clear film laminates have a long history in strengthening glass for protection against forcible entry. There is a new development though which is worthy of attention and it has nothing to do with security. These are the spectrally-sensitive solar films, such as made by CP Films, a unit of Solutia. Spectrally-sensitive films are very thin and are bonded to the inside surface of windows. Technologically advanced they reject a high proportion of the Infra Red and Ultraviolet wavelengths of light as emitted by the sun. The advantage of blocking the infrared rays is the reduction of heat transmitted into a room. This can be quite substantial and the US Dept of Energy through the Energy Star program estimates that cooling accounts for some 50% of a home’s energy use. Spectrally sensitive films save money and provide a direct improvement in comfort. In terms of appearance they are slightly greenish in tint but that does not impact the visual display of the home nor does it alter the view from either the interior or exterior.
