HOME SECURITY by fitting SECURITY FILM
Thieves often break glass to gain entry to a home and ordinary glass provides very little protection against this kind of attack. A favorite method is smashing the glass in or beside the door and unlatching the lock by reaching inside. You might think this is very noisy. Think again, it’s not. The perpetrator muffles the sound by covering the impact area with padding, usually a wrapped up jacket. The result is very little sound on the outside. Once inside the smash and grab artist will look for car keys, cash and jewellery. Even with the best alarm system you don’t stand a chance and in a matter of minutes your losses can amount to $ 20,000 and more.
Security film, or more accurate, security laminates are an excellent defence against this type of burglary attack. However only thick security film laminates will work in this instance and by thick we mean 14 mils and up and we prefer 16 mil. Thin security films simply do not provide adequate resistance to rupture meaning that the glass will still separate and the bandit will get in. Many security film salespeople will tell you different however that is because few installers know how to install thick film.
Some basement windows can also be protected using security film, laminates, but this protection should only be used on insulated glass, ie; sealed units. Single glass is not usually adequately framed and on attack the glass will simply come out of the frame. Single glazed windows can be protected with steel screens or polycarbonate shields.
